You can convert a picture into a chart. Choose "Picture" when creating your chart (after choosing your craft and project type).
Note that this option is only available for colorwork. When creating your chart, choose one of these option:
- Crochet / Corner 2 Corner (C2C)
- Crochet / Colors
- Crochet / Filet
- Knitting / Colorwork
- Cross stitch
On the first screen you choose an image. For example, you can upload a photo that you have saved or search the web for an image.
The image must be a .jpg, .gif or .png file.
A picture with a clear contrast and bright colors gives the best result. Optionally you can edit your picture first before uploading it to Stitch Fiddle using this website: photo-editor.canva.com
After uploading your file you'll see an example of your chart.
The size of your chart is based on the number of columns and rows. The maximum grid size is 300 x 300 in the free version and 1,000 x 1,000 in the Premium version.
The final size of your project depends on a variety of factors: which yarn you use, which needles you use, your tension and how loose or tight you work. Based on the gauge proportions, you can calculate the final size of your project. Read more
The number of stitches (boxes) you've entered (the size) is the maximum number of stitches (boxes) for the longest side (horizontally or vertically). The other side is adjust according to the aspect ratio of your image.
The gauge proportions indicates the shape of the boxes. If the stitches are not exactly square, your final project may become a bit distorted, which results in a 'stretched' image.
The gauge proportions can be set when you have chosen knitting or crochet. For crochet, the boxes are squares by default. For knitting, the default gauge is set to 18/24 (rectangular boxes). You probably don't need to change this setting.

After uploading your image, you can rotate your image by clicking the rotate button at the top/left corner of your screen.
You can specify the number of different colors you'd like to use in your project.
The colors are automatically selected based on your image. Later on this year, it becomes possible to select the colors by yourself. Of course, after opening your chart, you can always customize the colors yourself.
The maximum number of unique colors is 50 in the free version, and 200 in the Premium version.
After opening your chart, you can edit and customize it. Often, details are not yet finished, which you can adjust per box.
You can also customize the colors or add symbols when two colors look similar.
Totally satisfied with your chart? After you've brought the necessary materials to your home you can start! Export your chart as a PDF file so you can print it, or use the built-in row counter to keep track your progress from your computer or tablet.
Some settings described on this page are not available on devices with a small screen (smartphones), because of the lack of space. Use a tablet or laptop/computer instead when you need the advanced features.
